History behind “Jesusita en Chihuahua” and the Mariachi, Miguel Dias

“Jesusita en Chihuahua”, was written by Quirino Mendoza y Cortés. He was Lt. Colonel during the Mexican Revolution and directing the military band Puebla.[1] Therefore it is a military piece of music. It was popular under farm workers in Mexico and it was first performed in 1916, but it only got popular in 1938 because of a Texas Swing Band that was playing it under the name “Jessie Polka”.[2] “Jesusita en Chihuahua” was first published on Miguel Dias´s album “Fiesta En Mexico” in the U.S. in 1956. It can be classified under Folk, Latin, Country and World music[3]. Since that there were many covers produced. It also has been played in many movies and a version with English and Spanish lyrics was developed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesusita_en_Chihuahua
Since it is a military piece it was about the ‘soldaderas’, who were women that accompanied the soldiers in the Mexican revolution and were even fighting at the front.[4]
